Welcome to 2nd Grade


Thanks for stopping by! My name is Lupita Estrada and I am the second grade teacher. This is my fourth year teaching at St. Joachim School. I graduated from San Jose State University with Bachelors in Social Work in 2007.  In 2009 I received my Multiple Subject Teaching Credential from Cal State East Bay. I am currently in the Master's Program in Education at Cal State East Bay. 

On a personal note, I was born and raised in the Bay Area. I have also been a parishioner of St. Joachim Church for over 18 years. I live in Hayward, with my two year son and my husband. 
Second Grade Curriculum


Reading Workshop

During Reading Workshops students will be learn various reading strategies. They will have the opportunity to apply the learned strategies independently, with a partner or/and in-group.  Students will meet 3 times a week as participants in Guided Reading.  During Guided Reading students will meet with the teacher and will work on the skills that need more assistance on. Some of the reading strategies that we will be focusing on are the following:
  • Predicting
  • Asking Questions
  • Clarifying
  • Summarizing
Writers Workshop
During Writers Workshop students will create a portfolio of their written work. Students will participate in a mini lesson where they will learn the skills of a good writer. Each student will select his or her own topic to write about. During Writing Workshop will meet with the teacher 2-3 times per week to confer and discuss their writing. Each student will have a small notebook where his or her progress will be noted. During writers workshop students will progress through the stages of the writing process (prewriting, revising, editing, and publishing)

During math students will have the opportunity to utilize manipulates to learn. Students will understand place value and number relationships in addition and subtraction. They will measure quantities with appropriate units. They will also classify shapes and see relationships among them by paying attention to their geometric attributes.

Social Studies

In students will learned the lives of people who make a difference in their everyday lives. They will also learn stories from extraordinary people from history. They will be able to demonstrate map skills by describing the absolute and relative location of people, places, and environment. Students will also understand basic economic concepts and their individual roles in economy.
